The best party conspiracy theories are the harmless, ridiculous ones. Nobody gets mad, everybody gets loud. Here are our top 10, and three ways to turn them into a game.
The 10 funniest (harmless) conspiracy theories
- Birds Aren’t Real. Every bird is a government surveillance drone. Power lines? Charging stations. (It started as satire in 2017. The pigeons have declined to comment.)
- Finland Doesn’t Exist. The “country” is just ocean, invented so Japan and Russia could secretly share fish. Finnish people find this hilarious.
- Bigfoot Is Avoiding You Personally. Thousands of sightings, zero good photos. Either he’s a myth or he’s the world champion of hide-and-seek and you are not invited.
- The Moon Landing Was Filmed in a Studio. The classic. Counterpoint: it would have been harder to fake it in 1969 than to actually go.
- Australia Is Fake. Everyone who “moved to Australia” was actually sent somewhere else. The spiders are CGI.
- Denver International Airport Is a Secret Base. The murals, the giant blue horse, the tunnels. Or: it’s an airport with weird art.
- Your Cat Works for Someone. It stares at nothing in the corner for a reason. It is receiving instructions.
- Weather Balloons Are Always Lying. Every time something weird shows up in the sky, it’s “a weather balloon.” How many balloons does the weather need?
- Socks Are Being Collected. The missing sock from every pair is going somewhere. Nobody has ever found the warehouse.
- Mattress Stores Are a Front. There are too many mattress stores and nobody is ever in them. Explain that.

3 ways to play
1. Defend It (60 seconds)
Write each theory on a slip of paper. Each guest draws one and has 60 seconds to defend it like their life depends on it. Everyone votes. Lowest score wears the foil hat.
2. Invent-a-Theory on your phones
The free Conspiraparty phone game does this for you: everyone gets a prompt, writes a theory, and the group rates whose lie is most convincing.
3. Conspiracy Bingo
Squares like “someone says ‘wake up’,” “a pigeon is blamed,” “someone mentions Area 51.” The printable kit includes bingo plus three more games.
